“We are still working out the details but it will likely involve the synchronization of light, digital projection and laser into a multidimensional show. We want to transport the audience and take them on a journey that they will never forget”
We sat down for a yarn with a dear amigo and talented visual artist, Kit Webster ahead of our upcoming MAHICO Garden Festival, over the long weekend on January 27th. Kit has been weaving his visual magic at Mahico almost since inception and we are so humbled to have him part of our familia. We touch on all things art, living in the Northern Rivers and his upcoming visual project with Katherine from Amaru Tribe at The Green Room.

Hola Kit, thanks for taking  the time to sit down with us today. You are originally from Melbourne but have been residing in the Northern Rivers for some time now. Can you talk about what you love about the change and how you feel creating art up here?

I escaped the Melbourne lockdowns and the rest was history. It’s been incredible living here and a huge lifestyle change. I love Melbourne, the food and culture is second to none, but the people, weather and nature up here is worth the move. It’s been an enriching experience for mind, body and soul and makes me see the value in good community.

Your visual installations have taken you around the globe over the past decade or so. Where have you been recently and what are some projects currently in the works for you at the moment?

A laser and sound installation in Budapest for the Light Art Museum in August. Before that was around a year ago for a light festival in Taiwan. I'm working up some new ideas that I'm excited about that involve levitation, fire and kinetics. I'm interested in incorporating more physics into my work.

We are super feliz (happy) to have you on board at our next festival January 27th. In addition to that we are super excited that you have paired up with Katherine from Amaru Tribe to create the stage backdrop and visuals. What can we expect to see at Mahico over the Jan long weekend?

I will be imbuing Katherines work with my technical experience in concert lighting, projection mapping and stage design. We are still working out the details but it will likely involve the synchronization of light, digital projection and laser into a multidimensional show. We want to transport the audience and take them on a journey that they will never forget.

As an artist I am sure you spend a lot of solo time in your studio. Are collaborations something that you do regularly? What are some things you like about sharing the creative process with another artist?

Collaborations are super important. It just makes the process more interesting and allows for grand visions to unravel. When I create the music for my art installations I generally take that solo, but the visual and other technical elements I get help with a lot. These days I tend to take a more ideation and creative directorial approach, and bring others into the mix. There is a lot of strategy involved in the development of new media art installations and my visions are absurdly ambitious. Its one thing to come up with the idea, but executing and managing the project is an artform in itself.

We can’t wait to create magic with you at our upcoming festival! Lastly, what is it about Mahico that you enjoy the most?

I love how well curated the Mahico fiesta is, there is so much attention to detail from Jordan and the crew. It’s inspiring to witness. It's the little things that help create a truly memorable and high vibrational experience. There is a strong community aspect to the people that attend. It’s tribalistic and everyone has high expectations of the next Mahico. It’s a pleasure to be part of the team offering this exceptional event to the northern rivers community.
